What is a malformation scan (second trimester scan)?

What is a malformation scan (second trimester scan)?

A malformation scan, also known as a second trimester scan, is a voluntary scan offered halfway through pregnancy, typically between weeks 19 and 21. The exact timing of the appointment depends on your region and place of birth. The purpose of the scan is to thoroughly examine the baby's organs and development.

When is the anomaly scan?

The official recommendation is that the anomaly scan be performed in pregnancy weeks 19-21. Many people may find themselves Googling: “when is the anomaly scan?” – but although the timing is relatively standardised across the country, there is unfortunately no clear answer as to exactly when it takes place – not until you have the appointment letter in your hand. The scan will also confirm a more precise due date, which will be used to plan your future midwife visits, among other things.

What is examined during a malformation scan?

During a malformation scan, the following areas are checked thoroughly:

  • The baby's organs and general development
  • The position of the placenta (this can be important for the birth)
  • Possible malformations, e.g., spina bifida or missing organs

In some cases, the malformation scan will show that the placenta is located in front of the cervix, but it usually moves away during pregnancy, so there is no cause for concern yet, and you will initially only be offered an extra scan to keep an eye on whether the placenta moves as the baby and your belly grow.

Risks associated with a malformation scan

There are no risks associated with the malformation scan itself. However, it is important to note that the malformation scan does not guarantee that the baby will be born completely healthy. Some malformations, such as certain heart conditions, can be difficult to detect, while others are more obvious. However, the scan provides a good indication of whether everything looks normal, and if you leave the malformation scan with the message that everything looks normal, you can rest assured.

Abortion after a malformation scan

In rare cases, the scan may reveal serious malformations, and in these situations, you must consider whether to continue the pregnancy or have an abortion after the malformation scan. This assessment is made with loving and professional guidance so that you can make the decision that is right for you.

Malformation scan - A special experience

The vast majority of people experience the malformation scan as a positive, significant, and moving experience. It marks an important milestone, namely that you are halfway through your pregnancy. It is often possible to see the sex of the baby during this scan, which many people find to be a very special and enjoyable experience. If you do not want to know the sex, simply mention this to the scanning midwife.

As far as possible, try not to be too nervous about the scan. Remember that for most parents, it ends up being a joyful and memorable experience.
