Pregnancy, fluid retention, and (very!) swollen legs

Pregnancy is an incredible journey, but let’s talk about one of the less glamorous aspects: fluid retention, also known as edema. Many women experience it, especially towards the end of pregnancy, and if you’ve noticed that your feet suddenly look like little inflated balloons, you’re definitely not alone.

But why does fluid build up in the body? As your uterus grows, it puts pressure on the large veins, making it harder for blood to circulate back from your legs. This causes fluid to be pushed into the surrounding tissues, and voilà—you find yourself pregnant with feet twice their normal size and swollen legs. For some, it only happens in the evening, leaving behind marks from tight socks around the ankles, while others find that flip-flops are the only shoes that fit, no matter the season. Pregnancy is full of surprises, and fluid retention in the feet and legs is just one of them. Some women may also notice small bulges in their veins, known as varicose veins, which most commonly appear on the lower legs but are generally harmless.

It doesn’t stop there. Fluid can also accumulate in the hands and fingers, so it’s a good idea to remove your favorite rings in advance. Trust me, getting them stuck later is no fun. And just to top it all off, swelling can even reach your face, leaving you with a nose that could make Rudolph jealous. But don’t worry - it usually disappears within a week after birth. There isn’t much you can do to completely prevent fluid retention, but there are a few tricks to help reduce swelling throughout the day.

What can you do?

🦵🏻 Lie down with your legs elevated and do circulation-boosting exercises. Think of it as a mini workout for your feet to get the blood flowing.

🏊🏻‍♀️ Go for a swim. The water helps massage excess fluid back into the bloodstream.

🚶‍♀️ Move lightly - a short walk or even some bedroom gymnastics (with your legs up!) can work wonders.

🧘🏻‍♀️ Consider acupuncture if the swelling becomes a real nuisance. Your midwife might be able to advise you.

And as a little bonus, while you might be feeling like an overinflated balloon, remember this: you are fully entitled to ask your partner for daily leg massages to relieve the swelling. For extra nourishment and hydration, try using our Embrace body oil. Just remind them to massage upwards towards the heart - it’s great for circulation.

Pregnancy is (also) hard work, but thankfully, the swelling disappears shortly after birth. Until then, be kind to yourself - and your feet! Massage, movement, and keeping your legs elevated will help make the wait a little more comfortable.
